The inside pole, or "eastern style" wall tent is the oldest and most authentic wall tent design. It derives its name from the fact that it can be set up with a minimum of three poles: two uprights and a ridge pole on the inside of the tent. The tent pictured above is an eastern style with outside wall poles. This set up works the best, although it is possible to tie the walls off at a wide angle, eliminating the need for the outside poles. Brass grommets are put in the peak of your tent so that you can attach a fly if you choose to.

The other type of setup is the outside pole, or "western style". This style came later. Rather than uprights, long crosspoles on the outside of the tent are used to hold up the peak. The only pole inside the tent is the ridge pole, and it sticks out each end of the tent, where the crosspoles (in an "X" configuration) support it. Tipi poles or saplings were most commonly used for western style setups. When an encampment was pitched, the poles were cut from the area. When an encampment was over the poles were simply left behind. New ones were cut at the next site. Since the poles weren't transported it didn't matter how long or bulky they were.

Today, of course we use all sorts of contraptions to haul poles around and the number and length of those poles is a major concern. That along with authenticity is the reason that we make the eastern style wall tent.

Once in a while we get a request for the western style, and we will make your wall tent in this style at no extra charge.

We make your wall tent with a door at each end. This adds all-weather flexibility to your tent in the summer, you can create a nice breeze by opening each end. In the winter you can close these doors snugly, because they have 6" overlapping facings with ties both inside and out.

If you want one end solid instead, just tell us, and we'll do it at no extra charge.
